2、Introduction to the Scenic Spot

Taixugong Temple was built by Qiu Chuji, the founder of the Quanzhen Longmen School, in 1191 BC, based on his former residence, and has a history of over 800 years. It used to cover an area of nearly 90,000 square meters, which is about 130 acres. Emperor Zhangzong of Jin Dynasty personally bestowed the plaque “Taixuguan”, which is the current Taixugong Temple. In 1207 AD, the Empress Dowager worshipped Qiu Chuji as her master and gave him more than 6,000 volumes of the Taoist Canon, which was sent to Taixugong Temple as a treasure of the temple. Because Taixugong Temple is located in Qiu Chuji’s hometown, Binduli village, local people also call it “Bindugong”. The old custom is to celebrate the “Yanjiu Festival” on the nineteenth day of the first lunar month. In Qixia, every year from the thirteenth to the nineteenth day of the first lunar month, a “Yanjiu Festival” is held. “This is to commemorate Qiu Chuji’s birthday. During this period, there are drama performances, martial arts acrobatics, famous snacks, craft exhibitions, etc. The atmosphere of the temple fair is lively, constantly enriching and diversifying, gradually forming a large temple fair.”

Until the 1960s, Taixugong Temple still preserved the Qiuzu Temple and Qiu Mu Pagoda, but later they were destroyed due to the Cultural Revolution. In order to commemorate Qiu Chuji and promote Taoist culture, the Qixia Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government began to rebuild the temple on the original site in 1995. In 2003, it was designated as a religious activity venue by the State Council, becoming another large-scale Taoist temple in Shandong Province and even the whole country. On September 28, 2007, Taixugong Temple was grandly opened and consecrated, marking a new chapter in the development of Taixugong Temple.

There are 33 large and small temples in Taixugong Temple. There is a saying in Qixia that “Datongming Temple is only one brick away from the Baohe Palace in Beijing”, and even claims that “it can be compared to the imperial palace”. It has the largest Sanqing Temple in China, the world’s first Chinese character gate – the “Dao” character gate, a large-scale blue stone relief fairy wall, Wofeng Bridge built by Qiu Chuji when he fought with the Buddhists, and other buildings. It is known far and wide for its grand scale, majestic momentum, beautiful environment, and strong religious and cultural atmosphere, and is known as the “Crown of the Eastern Taoist Forest”.
