Recommended Camping Spots in Wulong, Chongqing

Wulong, a major tourist county in Chongqing, naturally has many places to visit, especially in summer when it truly becomes a camping paradise. There are many great campsites here, not only with moderate temperatures but also breathtaking night views. Today, I’m going to recommend a few campsites in Wulong District!

1、Moon Bay

Recommended Camping Spots in Wulong, Chongqing

Moon Bay is composed of scenic spots such as Shanwan (mountain bay), grassland, Yuetan (moon pond), Xianya (fairy cliff), Qisong (unique pines), etc. It is located on a mountaintop with an altitude of around 1220 meters, offering a wide view. You can see the windmills in Siyuanping and Xiannvshan across the river. It’s a paradise hidden away from the Wujiang River. The grassland sits amidst four peaks, connected to the outside world by three passes and a trough. It is the best campsite in the Baimashan Tianshiqingyuan Scenic Area. Major scenic spots include “Sunrise of Fairy Mountain, Moonlight of Horse Mountain, and Cloud Mist of Gorge”, etc. Tourists can enjoy the river from the cliffs, the clouds from the mountains, and the wind on the grassland.

The campsite has complete water, electricity, sanitation, and shower facilities. It offers catering and barbecue services. You can rent tents. If you don’t want to sleep in a tent, there are independent small rooms available. There are also large yurts and more than ten summer houses. Those who are not comfortable spending the night outside can stay at nearby farmhouses.

2、Huangbaitang

Huangbaitang is located at the foot of Lingguishan Mountain in Fuxing Village, Huangying Township, about 30 kilometers from the county town. It has an altitude of 1800 meters and a wetland area of over 600 acres, making it the highest wetland in Chongqing. In the dense primeval forest, there are three national first-class protected animals: leopard, clouded leopard, and musk deer, as well as dozens of other rare animals like macaques, sika deer, civet cats, red-bellied pheasants, and four-voice cuckoos. The vast wetland is rich in flora, with over 1500 species ranging from algae and ferns to rich higher plants, forming the Baimashan Biological Gene Bank. The ubiquitous streams and lakes make Huangbaitang a top choice for camping and fishing enthusiasts. Among them, the largest lake, Prince Lake, covers an area of over 8000 square meters and is known as the lake in the sky. It is shimmering with blue waves, reflecting the sky and clouds, with fish leaping and kites flying. The lake shore is covered with lush grass, creeping vines, and blooming mountain flowers. You’ll often see anglers by the lake. Trust me, after visiting once, you’ll also become one of those frequent anglers by the lake.

The Zhaojiaxiang Shanhuguan Reservoir is an artificial reservoir built in Zhaojiaxiang, Baimashan, Wulong County, Chongqing. The scenic area combines magnificent mountains and beautiful waters, making it suitable for leisure and vacation. Every summer, hundreds of elderly people from the main urban area come here to escape the heat and spend nearly three months during the hot summer. 4、Xiannvshan Scenic Area

Recommended Camping Spots in Wulong, Chongqing

The picturesque forest and grassland scenery of Xiannvshan is considered by countless tourists to be the “No. 1 Pastureland in Southern China” with a Western European pastoral style. It boasts a 100,000-acre grassland. Because the grassland is adjacent to the forest and connected to the hills, the view is somewhat obscured by trees and low hills, essentially forming a unified whole. Imagine galloping on horseback across such a grassland, feeling the wind in your hair – what a thrilling experience! It’s not just that, you can also go sledding and skiing here, feeling like you’re flying. The scenic area features the rare alpine grassland scenery in the south, making it very suitable for setting up tents. Xiannvshan has an average temperature that is 15 degrees lower than Chongqing’s main urban area, so remember to keep warm at night.

The Mengliang Valley Scenic Area is located in Xiannvshan Town, Wulong, Chongqing. It’s a large basin covering over 300 acres, situated on the hillside of Xiannvshan. It’s located in Hetuocun Village, about 80 kilometers from Wulong County Town. In the morning, the entire valley is shrouded in fog. Looking down from above, it appears like a lake, giving people a dreamy feeling, hence the name Mengliang Valley. The average altitude of Mengliang Valley is between 1300 and 1500 meters, with a canyon area of about 500 acres. The best view is from the entrance of the valley as you cross it. It’s absolutely breathtaking! It’s a photographer’s paradise. Mengliang Valley is quiet, spacious, and comfortable, with excellent water sources. It’s been recognized by Chongqing hikers as the best place in Chongqing to set up a tent.

6、Tanzishan

Recommended Camping Spots in Wulong, Chongqing

When you hear the name Tanzishan, you might feel confused, but when you mention the windmills in Siyuanping, it becomes clear, right? Yes, Siyuanping is located on Tanzishan. The unique feature of Tanzishan lies in the Siyuanping Wind Farm, covering 6.6 square kilometers. 58 wind turbine units are distributed along the ridge, with a white “windmill” every kilometer, slowly and rhythmically rotating its 20-meter-long three-bladed propeller. Because of its high altitude and undeveloped status, Siyuanping has become a favorite destination for self-driving enthusiasts and hikers over the years. If you love self-driving tours or hiking, and you prefer places without a heavy commercial atmosphere while wanting to immerse yourself in nature, then Tanzishan Siyuanping will surely delight you. Who wouldn’t want to sleep on the grass, under the stars, experiencing a unique camping experience with windmills as your backdrop?

7、Tongzishan

Tongzishan isn’t as famous as the previous two, but the scenery here is “just right” in Chongqing dialect: an endless expanse of alpine flowers.

Tongzishan is located at the junction of Wulong, Pengshui, and Fengdu, connected to Xiannvshan, and belongs to the Wuling Mountains. The main part of the mountain range is located northwest of Tongzishan Town. The highest peak, Huajianyan, reaches 2688 meters in altitude and is located within Tongzishan Town. Since the beginning of 2012, the town has been developing a 10,000-acre flower and seedling garden, which has taken shape. It has established over 1,000 acres of crape myrtle gardens, over 800 acres of cherry blossom gardens, over 600 acres of osmanthus gardens, over 200 acres of maple gardens, over 200 acres of winter plum gardens, over 200 acres of crabapple gardens, and more than ten modern agricultural sightseeing gardens, forming a unique modern agricultural sightseeing tourism base in the town. What do you think? These figures are already captivating, right? They’re all flower fields! Camping amidst flower fields is the dream of many young ladies. In addition, Tongzishan also has the World Natural Heritage Core Area formed by karst landforms, scenic spots like Erwangdong Cave, Shizhu Tiankeng (sky pit), Taoyuandong Cave, Dahandong Cave, as well as multiple scenic spots like Huajianyan grassland, Huatao primeval forest, Guantian terraced fields, etc. There are countless suitable places for camping, waiting to be discovered by hikers.

8、Zhuzixi

Zhuzixi is also known as Zhuzixi, named after the dense bamboo forests on both banks in the past. The scenic area is located in Haokou Township, Wulong County, at the junction of Chongqing and Guizhou on the upper reaches of the Furong River. It stretches nearly 5 kilometers. The Zhuzixi Scenic Area features many scenic spots, including Zhuzixi Creek, Red Army Ferry, Manao Flying Spring, and Jiang Taigong Fishing. Zhuzixi is a great place for family trips, full of wild fun. On the sandy beach in the river, there are wild ducks, mandarin ducks playing in the water, and cranes gathering in groups. But be sure to pay attention to safety by the water, with adults supervising and protecting the children. You can camp both outside and inside the valley, offering diverse site choices.

9、Xiannv Lake

Xiannv Lake is the best place to fish for Maikou fish. There’s an asphalt road by the lake, and occasionally people come here for outdoor wedding photo shoots. There are farmhouses by the lake, with mountains behind them shaped like turtles. From the Xiannv Lake dam, go up the mountain, and over the mountain is Mengliang Valley, about 1 kilometer away. You can spend the night in Mengliang Valley and then go down to Xiannv Lake in the morning. There are two meadows along this route that are also suitable for camping. It’s not hot in the dog days of summer. Compared to the “cold” Mengliang Valley, the temperature here is more suitable for tent overnight stays, providing more comfort.
