The Best Hiking Routes to Mount Hua

Mount Hua Scenic Area, the Western Peak, is a very famous tourist attraction in China. It is definitely worth visiting. If you want to hike Mount Hua, how should you plan your trip? How should you travel by cable car? Let’s take a look!

I. Cable Car Hiking Routes

1. The route from the West Peak up and the North Peak down: This is the most recommended route. After getting off the West Peak cable car, it is recommended to head straight to the “Long Kong Plank Road” on the South Peak. It is recommended not to spend too much time taking pictures. Go to the “Long Kong Plank Road” first while there are few people, then head straight to the “Yazi Fanzhen” on the East Peak. After you are done with the “Yazi Fanzhen”, you can slow down and visit the East Peak, Middle Peak, and West Peak. It takes about 2 hours to visit the four main peaks without playing the “Long Kong Plank Road” and “Yazi Fanzhen”. If you play, please add the waiting time yourself. After visiting the four main peak areas, follow the signs to the North Peak cable car (approximately 3 hours of sightseeing and photography), and take the North Peak cable car down the mountain.

PS: It is recommended to go down the mountain early during peak season because you have to go through the Jinsuo Pass, which only allows 2 or 3 people to walk side by side, so it will be slower. In addition, there is a shopping area on the way to the West Peak cable car. Sometimes scammers will use accomplices to set up scams there. If you need to buy anything, please be vigilant.

2. The route from the North Peak up and the West Peak down: As the North Peak is the lowest peak of Mount Hua, the tour route from the North Peak up is relatively physically demanding. After a whole day of sightseeing, you may be physically or mentally exhausted. In this case, taking the West Peak cable car down for a long time will not be cost-effective. Therefore, this route is not recommended.

3. The route from the North Peak up and the North Peak down: Both the way up and the way down are the North Peak, which is the most economical route besides hiking. However, you need to take a detour and spend some time. Walk from the North Peak to the main peak area, visit it, and then return to the North Peak cable car to go down the mountain.

4. The route from the West Peak up and the West Peak down: Directly skip the North Peak, visit the main peak area, and then go down from the West Peak, which is the fastest and easiest tour route. It only takes about 2 hours to complete (excluding the time waiting to play the “Long Kong Plank Road” and the “Yazi Fanzhen”). Of course, the disadvantages are also obvious: high cost, incomplete visit to the scenic area, and some regrets. However, it is suitable for those who have a very tight schedule and do not have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

II. Hiking Routes

1. The tour route after climbing Mount Hua at night

Because the “Zhiqu Huashan Road” is too steep, with many steps close to 80-90 degrees, and the lighting system is not very good, it is not suitable for night climbing. Therefore, hiking at night basically can only choose the “Zigu Huashan Yi Tiao Lu” (the only road up Mount Hua since ancient times), and the destination is basically the East Peak Sunrise Viewing Platform. The route is from the mountain gate to the North Peak and then to the East Peak Sunrise Viewing Platform.

Rest for a while after sunrise. If you have a lot of energy, just go along the East Peak, South Peak, and West Peak. If you don’t have enough energy, you can change routes and go to the cable car queue early to go down the mountain. You can go down from the West Peak or the North Peak.

2. The tour route after climbing up the “Zhiqu Huashan Road”

The entrance to the “Zhiqu Huashan Road” is near the North Peak cable car station. You need to take a special bus from the visitor center to the North Peak cable car to get there. The same is true for going down the “Zhiqu Huashan Road”; you need to take the special bus back to the visitor center from the North Peak cable car station. The “Zhiqu Huashan Road” is not the same road as shown in the TV series; it is a path built when the North Peak cable car was built. The road is very steep, with many steps close to 90 degrees. However, the “Zhiqu Huashan Road” is not as long as the “Zigu Huashan Yi Tiao Lu”, and it takes about 2 to 3 hours to walk the whole way. If you want to challenge yourself, you can try it.

Climbing up from the “Zhiqu Huashan Road”, you first reach the North Peak, then from the North Peak to the main peak area (about 3 hours) and visit the area (2 hours without playing the “Long Kong Plank Road” and “Yazi Fanzhen”), you can get off the West Peak cable car nearby.

III. Other Tour Routes

These are just some of the more recommended and common tour routes. You can, of course, create your own route based on your needs. If you hike during the day, you can include the “Zhiqu Huashan Road”. This way, you can choose the right route for you from a combination of the “West Peak Cable Car”, “North Peak Cable Car”, “Zhiqu Huashan Road”, and “Zigu Huashan Yi Tiao Lu”.
